Mt. Washington Cog Railway, Mt. Washington, New Hampshire
Trains climb 3 1/2 miles to the 6,228-foot high summit of the Northeast's highest mountain. Completed in 1869, this cog railway was the first in the world. Train in picture is on Jacob's Ladder, steepest point in climb with grade of 38 per cent.
