This unusual gasoline-powered tractor-trailer rig was bought by the Hoosac Tunnel & Wilmington in 1923 from the 4-Wheel Drive Auto Company of Clintonville, Wisconsin. This train, with its 95 h.p., 6-cylinder T-head engine, top speed of 45 m.p.h. and gas consumption of 5 miles per gallon, was hailed as the salvation of shortlines everywhere. It was a bad buy for the HT&W. An illustration from "Hoot Toot & Whistle" by Bernard R. Carman from the Shortline Railroad Series published by The Stephen Greene Press.
