The Martz Story

Martz Trailways began in 1908, the brainchild of Frank Martz, Sr., at that time a youth who worked in his father's general store in Avondale, Pennsylvania. He perceived that people would welcome some means other than 'foot-travel' to carry them to the neighboring towns of Plymouth and West Nanticoke. With the help of a single touring car he put his idea to a successful test, and seats were soon at a premium. In 1912 Martz accepted an offer to take over operation of a bus line already running from the western part of Wilkes-Barre to Plymouth. He incorporated the White Transit Company, and improved service by adding new routes. In 1927 Frank Martz Coach Company was born, the result of Martz's determination to provide fast intercity express service. Frank Martz, Jr., succeededto the presidency upon his father's death and decisively tackled the momentous challenges thrust upon him by the nation's Great Depression. Through careful reorganization and adjustment, the younger Martz brought this father's creation through the Depression and World War II and lef it stronger than it had been before. In 1964 Frank M. Henry assumed the presidency and continues to make Martz Trailways a creative, responsive and progressive servant of a mobile and energetic people.
