Nashua City Station - Electric Railways of Southern N.H.

Electric Railways of Southern N.H.

Manchester and Nashua St Ry #38

Electric railways, were the public transit for the early 19th century. They started as horse railways within cities both big and small. Once the great innovation of the century was invented, electricity, the small railways were able to expand and connect the cities. Interurban lines provided competition for the steam railroads, often having parallel lines with them. The interurban lines provided cheaper and more frequent service, but the steam railroads could get you farther in less time and they had just a few more feature comforts. In a few cases, the railroads purchased the electric railways to eliminate the competition and to suppliment railroad service.
